Broccoli in Italian refers to the flowering top of cabbage, is an ancient European vegetable. High in fiber and vitamin C, 30 mg per serving. Broccoli is one of six cole crops of the species Brassica oleracea: 1. cabbage, 2. cauliflower, 3. Brussels sprouts, 4. heading and sprouting broccoli, 5. European kale and collards and 6. kohlrabi. The word cole is traced back through Middle English and Anglo-Saxon dialects to the Latin words caulis which means “stem” or “stalk”.
