HOW TO GROW CRIMSON CLOVER
Does best in cool, humid weather. Performs poorly in the heat of summer. Where winter is above -10°F (-23.3°C), it is sown in late summer September to October, resumes growth in spring, maturing in June. Grown as winter annual in Pacific Northwest and California. Sow quickly after the removal of a prior crop at the rate of 20-25 lb./acre (20-22 kg/ha). Succeeds better when only the surface of the soil is stirred by the disc and harrow than when plowed. It grows rapidly in spring and yields an abundant crop of green food, particularly palatable to live stock. Inoculate for better results. Tends to eliminate other desirable spring and early-summer native vegetation, do not plant with other wildflowers.

Beautiful crimson-red flowers are produced throughout the spring and summer, stems are un-branched or branched at the base. Grows from 12” to 20” tall. Crimson clover fixes pp to 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre. It is an excellent choice for underseeding as it grows well in the shade of other crops. Easier to incorporate in the spring than Hairy Vetch. Crimson clover is widely grown as a protein-rich forage crop for cattle and other livestock. It is also suitable for making into hay. It is often used for roadside erosion control, as well as beautification. Only one cutting, however, can be obtained, as it does not shoot again after being mown. Crimson clover will not re-grow after close grazing or mowing once flowering has begun. Do not use for frost seeding as it won't handle the cold nearly as well as red clover.
