Originated in the South Asia Indo-Burma center of modern-day Myanmar and Bangladesh. It has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. The first known written record of the plant is found in Qí mín yào shù, an ancient Chinese agricultural treatise completed in 544. Even today, 83 percent of all eggplant production is in modern China and India. The common name comes from the phenotype varsities that are white and smaller oval much the same size as chicken or duck eggs.
