Similar in appearance to other carrot family members. Seeds are used whole as a spice in breads, especially rye bread, anise-like flavor. Also used in desserts, dishes, curry and liquors. Young leaves are used in soups, stews and salads. Seeds often chewed after a meal to freshen breath like fennel. Roots of young first year plants cooked like parsnips, stronger flavor.
