HOW TO GROW QUINOA
Direct sow after last frost. In cold climates it can be started 4-6 weeks in advance indoors and planted out after last frost. In zone 7B We direct sow like Corn May –June 10. Cover seeds very lightly or just water in. Seed heads often require ripening. Cut and hang in a dry airy place with a tarp under or put in a paper bag. Soak and rinse 2-3 times before cooking to remove bitter saponins. Tolerant to dry soil.After harvest, the seeds must be thoroughly washed to remove the coating containing the bitter soapy tasting saponins. This bitterness has beneficial effects during cultivation, as the plant is unpopular with birds and therefore requires minimal protection. Soil pH 6-8.5. Hardiness zones 4-11. Annual.
