Start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost and transplant after last frost. To over winter, start in flats 3 to 5 weeks before transplanting in mid to late summer. Direct seed in early spring as soon as soil can be worked or fall when evening temps are below 60˚F. Growing is similar to lettuce, plant in succession every three weeks for continuous harvest. Perennial frequently grown as an annual leaf vegetable. When being grown as perennial, directly sow in June then thin all summer. Soils rich in available phosphorous are desirable, since it is essential to early plant development. Most chicories will survive winter temperatures between 20 and 25˚F and are most cold hardy before they have formed a full head. Soil pH 6.6-7.8. Hardiness zones 4-9. Perennial.
