Zone Tillage in an innovative time-saving method because you only have to make one pass to prepare a crop. Instead of plotting and discing, you disturb approximately 6–8" wide band for planting. It works better in cooler climates like the Northeast and Midwest than no-till. Zone tillage works well with large seeded vegetable crops including sweet corn, beans and pumpkins. It may also work well with transplanted crops such as tomatoes, peppers and cabbage.
The key is to do vertical tillage instead of horizontal tillage to prevent compaction. Zone tillage has no sideways sheering. It also solves two problems of no-tillage. One of closing the seed slot to get good germination and two allowing to put fertilizer down. This allows the planter/seeder and fertilizer to work as intended.
