HOW TO GROW PEPPER

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost, plant out 2 weeks after last frost. When true leave show, pot up to 3-4” pot, grow at 80–90˚F day and 60˚F night. Plant out when nights are above 53-55˚F. Water in with phosphorus solution. Peppers have shallow roots and appreciate frequent light watering. They thrive on lighter sandy or silt loam soils that warm up fast allowing vigorous early growth before flowering. Use row covers if danger of frost. If you live in a part of the country where pepper plants yield only couple fruits per year, grow more plants. Peppers grow well in containers or raised beds. Soil pH 5.5-6.8. Hardiness zones 9. Annual.

The Lannuzi Family shared some of the seed with their neighbors, the Tom Svoboda and Jana Demartini-Svoboda, who bred the seeds for the earliest peppers to fully mature in the Pacific NW. “Svoboda” is the Czech word for Freedom. These pimento peppers are sweet at the tip, and increasingly hot towards the stem. Amazingly delicious when roasted. Also make incredibly sweet dried peppers, and pepper flakes! Staking recommended, as the plants grow quite large with heavy, high yields. This seed was shared with us from Saltwater Seeds, who was given seed from Casey Burns- friend of the Svobodas. Tags: Type: Roasting, Color: Red, Size: Small, Season: Summer.

In its native habitat of Mexico, Central America and northern South America peppers grow into large perennial shrubs. Especially productive with heat and dry climates, does best in a greenhouse our quickhoop in the spring and fall.
