Egyptian Walking Onions

Allium proliferum

HOW TO GROW WALKING ONIONS

Plant the bulbs 4-6” apart, in the ground, container garden, or raised bed in the Fall or Spring, around the same time that you’d plant garlic in your climate. They thrive in many environments! Press the bulbs 1-2” into the soil with the pointed end of the bulb facing up towards the sun. Bulbs will sprout quickly in the fall or spring, and will thrive with adequate water and fertile soil. Mulch with straw. Even if their green tops are weighted down with heavy snow in the winter, they will sprout back. Walking onions will spread through the garden bed. The onions can be divided and propagated at the base of the plant or via the small bulbils that form on the top of the green onions. Hardiness zones 3-10. Perennial.

Planting Depth 2"
Plant Spacing 4-6”

Walking onions are an assured and fun way to enjoy green onion tops through the seasons in your garden. The onion bulbs are small, and therefore the onions are planted for their delicious green tops. In many climates, they’ll thrive through winter as well, or sprout back as soon as the snow melts. The onions will multiply, and “walk” through the garden bed where they are planted, creating a larger patch. They flower and grow aerial bulbils, which can be harvested and planted, much like the onions at the base. Tags: Harvest: All, Color: Green, Size: Medium, Shape: Upright, Specialty: Year Round, Heritage: Heirloom, Season: Spring Fall Winter.

The story goes that ancient Egyptians buried the pharoahs with onions. Onions were found in King Ramesses’ IV eye sockets. These walking onions can also spread, or “walk” 1-3 feet per year, perhaps alluding to the Bangles 1980s song, “Walk like an Egyptian”.

Meet Your Farmer

We promote fair trade, organic practices and environmental responsibility throughout the Restoration Seeds supply chain. Below are the family farmers and seed suppliers who bring our open pollinated seeds to you.

Idyllwild Conventional Seed grower since 2018
Idyllwild was born of our joyful curiosity and celebration of nature’s diverse gifts. Following nature’s model of open dispersal and dissemination, we share these seeds with you and invite you to play in the garden of abundance. We learn from nature and she has taught us to live and think in terms of “abundance” instead of “scarcity”. Diversity - in all forms, from genetic to creative expression - is the heart of resilience. We enjoy experimenting with myriads of flavors, colors, and textures and the world opens to us in infinite possibilities. As a result, we are nourished in body, mind, and spirit.
