HOW TO GROW COLUMBINE, EUROPEAN PURPLE
Direct sow outside in the late winter/spring. Plant as soon as the ground is workable. They are cold hardy, and may require cold stratification if they are sown indoors in the spring. Or, direct sow in the autumn. Drought tolerant, re-seeds easily, and herbivore resistant. The plants will tolerate a range of soil types, and will grow well in full sun or partial shade. They flower better with some shade though. Plants will bloom during the second year of growth in true biennial form. Hardiness zones 3-9. Biennial.

This European columbine made its way to Eastern North America and is found wild in fields, roadsides, waste areas, abandoned homesteads, and forest edges. Its genus name, Aquilegia, is derived from the Latin word for eagle’s claw, in reference to the claw-like groups of seeds, or its curling flower nectar spurs.
