HOW TO GROW JOHNNY JUMP-UP
Sow indoors 8–12 weeks before last frost or planting out. Transplant when light frost is still possible. Prefers full sun in cooler climates and part-shade in hot southern climates. Trimming Johnny Jump-ups back in the heat of summer will encourage a second flush of blooms in the fall. Surface sow, press into soil, do not cover. Soil pH 5.8–6.8. Hardiness zones 4–9. Perennial.

The true Johnny Jump-Up. Beautiful tri-color perennial. Violas bloom in cool weather of spring and fall. We use as a permaculture and bulb ground cover in our perennial beds because the flowers are edible, it is low growing to 5–7”, clumping keeps out other weeds, it politely self-sows plus supports beneficial insects. In mild climates may bloom through the winter and overwinter dormant in climates as cold as USDA zone 4. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Also considered a medicinal herb, the Wild Pansy herb was used to treat skin conditions and is found growing in many herb gardens. Perennial often grown as an annual.
