Short evergreen shrub in tropics and hot deserts, 12-30” tall. Grown medicinally for its long brown tuberous roots. Sedative and Ginseng-like strengthening tonic, works mainly on the nervous and reproductive systems. Treats depleted energy, nervous system exhaustion, and tones the uterus after miscarriage. In Ayurvedic medicine, the berries and leaves are applied locally to ulcers and swelling. Fruit is orange red when ripe with coagulating properties, and can serve as a substitute for rennet in cheese making. Also known as Indian Ginseng and Winter Cherry.
Originally cultivated in the drier regions of India, also found in Nepal. Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means “horse’s smell” referring to its roots.
