HOW TO GROW BLACK COHOSH

Direct sow outdoors in the summer or early fall for germination in first or second spring. Requires cycle of warm summer temperatures, to cold winter with germination as soil warms in spring or early summer. If attempting to start indoors, warm stratify seeds at 70˚F for three months, then cold stratify at 40˚F for three months and then warm again to germinate in humus rich soil in shade house. Pot up and grown on in shade house for 1-2 years. Most easily propagated in the spring or fall by cutting rhizomes in to 2-3” lengths. Plant cuttings with buds facing up 2” deep in coil covered by 3” of hardwood bark mulch. Harvest roots in the fall after 3-5 years or leaves second year. Soil pH 5.6-7. Hardiness zones 4-8. Perennial.
